Athletic and Activity Eligibility Policy for 5th-8th Grade
Supporting Student Success in Academics and Activities
Grove School is committed to ensuring that all students make meaningful progress toward academic growth and achievement. Students who are not meeting academic expectations are expected to prioritize their studies. It is the student’s responsibility to work with his/her teachers
to ensure satisfactory progress in all subjects.
Any student in grades 5–8 who is not making satisfactory academic progress may be placed on probation for one week. During this probationary period, the student is expected to work closely with his/her teachers to address and resolve any academic concerns.
Each Friday, we run an Eligibility List for all 5th–8th grade students to ensure they are meeting academic standards and eligibility requirements for participation in all extracurricular activities including but not limited to:
- Athletic competitions
- Activity competitions including, but not limited to:
- Band
- Robotics
- National History Day
- Academic Bowl
- Archery
When Eligibility Check Begin:
- Weekly eligibility checks begin at the end of the third full week of each nine-week period. This gives students time to settle into their classes before monitoring begins.
Weekly Monitoring:
- Academic Probation:
- If a student’s grade in any subject falls below 60%, he/she is placed on Academic Probation for one week. The principal will notify the parent/legal guardian in writing when a student is placed on probation.
- Academic Restriction:
- If the student still has a grade below 60% in any subject the following week, he/she moves to Academic Restriction and is ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities for that week. The principal will notify the parent/legal guardian in writing when a student is placed on Academic Restriction.
- Continued Monitoring:
- Students remain on the list weekly until their average in all subjects is at or above 60% on a subsequent Academic Probation/Restriction List. A student can be placed on Academic Probation for one subject and on Academic Restriction the next week for another subject, even if the original grade has improved.
- Important Note:
- The Academic Probation/Restriction period will begin on Monday and continue through the following Sunday. Therefore, students remain on the Academic Probation/Restriction List for the entire week, even if their grades improve midweek. Removal from the list only occurs when the next weekly list is published.
- End-of-Nine-Week Rule:
- At the conclusion of each nine-week period, any student with a final grade of 59% or lower in any subject will be ineligible for the first three (3) weeks of the following nine-week period.
- Nine-week grades, not semester grades, are used for determining eligibility.
